So we have our book written, edited, saved in the format that Amazon likes, and a cover for it. What else could we need? How about the front and back matter? What’s that, you say? Yup, we have just a little further to go before publishing, but we actually get to make some choices now.
What is the front and back matter? How about:
- Title page
- Copyright page
- Dedication
- Preface
- Prologue
- Bibliography
- Appendix
- Notes
- Glossary
The ones in bold are the front matter (and are in the order you should place them in your book – with a page break between each), and the last 4 are back matter (and have no general order required)
Title – Centered, Title on top, Author name below, [insert page break]. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. (i.e.:)
How to Write a Blog

[page break]
Copyright – I used one that I found online. They’re easy to find and a piece of cake to tweak for your own needs.
Dedication – I’d like to thank the academy… you’ve seen them, you know what to do.
Preface and/or Prologue – If you’ve got ’em… stick ’em here.
The back stuff is pretty self-explanatory… just use your best judgement when popping them back there. (Don’t forget the page-breaks)
***Important stuff I forgot yesterday***
When using indents in your book (i.e. the beginning of paragraphs), DO NOT use the tab key. These tab indents will NOT convert over to the Kindle format. Use Word’s (or whatever program you’re using) settings to change this, not the tab key.
Table of Contents – Best to have one just for easy navigation. (but not if you don’t have any chapters or it’s a short story) Word has the ability to automatically create one for you. If you don’t want to use that, then you’ll have to manually create one using the hyperlink and bookmark functions.
