As we’re trudging through the mass of creeper vines and foliage of the forest’s undergrowth, let’s take a moment to ponder just what this ancient treasure is for. Who’s going to be reading this book? What age group are we hoping will reach their grubby little mitts for your tome.
Most people are aware of what age group they’d like to write for. Some people don’t. For me, I just write a story how it wants to be written and let the story decide. But in the end, who are we really writing for?
Ourselves. That’s your audience. Write the story YOU want. When all is said and done, that’s what all this writing business is about. Making yourself happy. It’s the whole reason you started in the first place, right? Whether it be with a, “I can write something better.”… or, “This really needs to be written.”… or, “I have an idea that I need to run with… let’s go.” Any and every reason for writing a book ultimately begins and ends with you, the writer.
So… you’re the audience. Remember that as you’re writing. If it’s supposed to be for the 9-12 year old crowd… make that puppy sing for the 9-12 year old you. Would you like the story? If so, you have a winner.
You are always going to be the litmus for your stories. While it’s true that some people will read anything, and there’s always an audience for even the wildest stuff out there… write for yourself and you can’t go wrong.
